Nokia Research Center (NRC) is working on future sustainable innovations through its strategic and long-term research activities and aims at becoming the leading research institute for sustainable innovations in mobility.
NRC already has sustainability oriented basic research, for example, in the area of telepresence and energy efficiency. To further advance in the sustainability area, NRC has established a research team to work on these issues.
NRC is collaborating with top universities and institutions in the area of sustainability research.
Q&A
What is Nokia's approach to environmental issues?
Nokia has been at the forefront of driving environmental initiatives in the mobile industry for more than a decade and believes that it makes good business sense to consider the environment in the way we work, engage employees, create our products and manage our operations. In this way, work is integrated across Nokia's business activities and is a part of the company culture.
What kind of sustainability research activities do you have at Nokia?
Nokia is working on innovations that will have a positive environmental impact through its strategic and long-term research activities. The NRC mindset fits well with solving the environmental problems the world is faced with today. However, when it comes to sustainability and the future, it is important to keep the positive end target in mind and to focus on solutions that can empower people.
Why are you doing this?
The focus of environmental technologies has shifted from manufacturing to products. In the near future we will see environmental technologies focusing more and more on what is needed by people to conduct a sustainable lifestyle. At the same time, profound change in our societies is needed to address global challenges - climate change mitigation and adaptation, peak oil, natural resource scarcity.
How do you conduct sustainability research?
NRC sets out to be the leading research institute for sustainability innovations in mobility expanding into areas of new sustainable products (e.g. already introduced the Eco Sensor concept) and services.
NRC Energy Efficient Computing team is looking at novel ways to reduce energy consumption of mobile devices. The main environmental impact is to reduce the energy needed for recharging the battery. In addition, the batteries have longer life with reduced need for recharging. This work also results in longer operating times, e.g. more time for watching video or browsing internet with one charge.
NRC already has sustainability oriented basic research, for example, in the area of telepresence, i.e. improved telecommunication experience and energy efficiency. To further advance in the sustainability area, NRC has established a research team to work on these issues. Currently the NRC Green Team is conducting research around services such as Ethical consumption, Intelligent carbon calculator and Environmental monitoring.
